Early Life & Biography:
Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo, Japan, on February 18, 1933, to her parents Isoko Ono and Eisuke Ono. She spent her childhood in Tokyo and also spent some time in New York with her parents. She started learning Piano from the age of 4 and attended Gakushuin school, which is one of the most exclusive schools in Japan.
After the world war II, she re-enrolled for the same school and completed her graduation in 1951. Ono was the first women to be accepted into the philosophy program at Gakushuin University. She left the university after two semesters and shifted to Scarsdale, New York, to join her family. She attended Sarah Lawrence College to complete her higher education.
Ono eloped with Toshi Ichiyanagi who is a Japanese composer while doing her graduation in 1956. The couple got divorced in 1962 and Ono got married to Anthony Cox who is an American film producer, jazz musician, and an art promoter. But the marriage was annulled because Ono neglected to finalize the divorce from her first marriage. Later on June 6, 1963, Cox and Ono married again. The couple was blessed with a daughter named Kyoko Chan Cox. They were separated on February 2, 1969, and Ono married John Lennon in the same year. Ono started learning classical piano from the age of four to thirteen. She took up vocal training in lieder-singing when she was 14. Later she went to present loft events on Chamber Streets which caught the attention of the popular New York’s avant-garde artists. This gave her an opportunity to work with leading musicians like Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, and Karl-Heinz Stockhausen.
