The real name of Uncle Kracker is Matthew Shafer. He was born in June 1974, in Mount Clemens, Michigan. He is the son of Sunny Shafer, who used to own a local gas station. He has a brother named Mike Shafer. In his childhood, he was friends with singer Kid Rock.
He attended L’Anse Creuse High School and used to play in the band Twisted Brown Trucker. He used to perform live at shows at a very young age. His brother currently works as a DJ. He has also assisted Kid Rock for his albums.
