Early Life & Biography
Matisyahu was born as Matthew Paul Miller on June 30, 1979, in West Chester, Pennsylvania and was brought up in White Plains, New York. Matisyahu attended the Hebrew School in White Plains and did his high schooling at the White Plains High School. He dropped out from the high school and immersed himself into drugs while following the band Phish on tour. Later he attended to the New York rehabilitation centre to relieve himself from his addiction to drugs. He was brought up as a Jew, and his stage name Matisyahu in Hebrew means Gift of God.
Matisyahu married Tahlia, an NYU film student in 2004. The couple has three sons Laivy, Shalom, and Menachem Mendel. The couple got divorced in 2012, which Matisyahu confirmed only in 2014, saying that they are still in good terms. Matisyahu also has another daughter, Sasha Lillian, with his girlfriend Toma Danley whom he met in 1997 while attending a drug recovery program in Bend, Oregon. Sasha was born with a defect in the heart which she overcame after surgeries. Matisyahu is a board member of the Jewish Vegan Organization.

Matthew released his first studio album Shake Off the Dust… Arise in 2004 after signing with JDub Records. He was invited as a guest by Trey Anastasio, a member of his favourite band Phish in 2005. His second studio album Youth was released in 2006 followed by Light in 2009, Spark Speaker in 2012, Akeda in 2014, and Undercurrent in 2017.
Matisyahu has done numerous tours and has a wide range of fan following. His current touring members include Joe Tomino (drums), Aaron Dugan (guitar), Stu Brooks (bass), and Big Yuki (keyboards). He has also done a lot of work collaborating with other artists such as beatboxer Kenny Muhammad, Trevor Hall, Shyne, J.Ralph, and Akon.
