Kristoffer Kristofferson was born in June 1936, in Brownsville, Texas. He is the son of Lars Henry Kristofferson and Mary Ann Kristofferson. His father was an officer in the United States Army Air Corps. His father wanted him to have a career in the military.
He went to San Mateo High School and graduated in 1954. He was an aspiring writer. Later, he attended Pomona College. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa fraternity.
