Bill Anderson or James William Anderson III was born on November 1, 1937, in Columbia, South Carolina to James William Anderson and Elizabeth Smith. He grew up in Griffin and Decatur, Georgia. Anderson went to the University of Georgia to study journalism.
Later he attended Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication where he earned his degree in journalism. After graduating from college, he got his first job in the newspaper Atlanta Constitution.
