R. Kelly was born on January 8, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois in the United States of America by Joanne Kelly who raised the family as a single mother. His mother died in the year 1993 and this one of the hardest time in his life. His father was absent throughout his life. He has a brother, Carey Kelly and has three children, Robert Kelly Jr., Jay Kelly and Joan Kelly. He started singing in his local church when he was just eight years old. He joined Kenwood basketball team shortly after joining the school.
