Saddam Hussein was born in a small town of Al-Awja in the year 1937. He was born a shepherd and belonged to the al-Begat group of the clan. His name, Saddam means, the one who can confront. This name was the idea of the future President’s mother. Saddam never knew who his father was in life. His actual father disappeared even before Saddam could come into this world.
Saddam’s brother died due to cancer at the age of 13. Infant Saddam went to his uncle’s home around that time and lived there till he became 3-years-old. Saddam’s mother remarried and gave birth to 3 more kids. Saddam’s step-father harshly treated the future president, which led him to flee his home. He started living with his uncle in Baghdad. Later Saddam with the help of his uncle completed school and entreated law college but dropped early to pursue a political career.
Saddam married his cousin in the year 1963 and had five children together. Saddam married Samira Shahbandar in the year 1986, who was his second wife. As per reports, Saddam married Nidal al-Hamdani later in life. The Iraqi president supposedly got married fourth time to Wafa el-Mullah.

Saddam Hussein rose to power after being a member of the Ba’ath Party. The party was an anti-government war machine. The group mostly consisted of educated professionals. After a murder coup, the party members including Saddam went to Syria. There in Syria, Saddam enjoyed all the benefits of being a member of the group. Later on, Saddam created Ba’athist security service, which he started to control.
When Al-Bakr became president of the country, Saddam became the president’s deputy. From 60’s to 70’s Saddam became a prominent political figure in Iraq. He established his personality as a progressive politician. He started following administrative, development and state welfare programs. He created campaigns like, “Compulsory Free Education in Iraq” and “National Campaign for the Eradication of Illiteracy”. He started developing applications that worked on improving Iraq’s economy and energy industries. In the year 1972, Saddam signed a treaty of friendship with the then Soviet Union.
In the year 1976, Saddam became the prominent face of the country and a strongman for the government. He came to power in the year 1979. During his reign as a president, he erected statues of him. Saddam has been responsible for Iran-Iraq war and Gulf War when he seized Kuwait.
After years of war, rebellions started to form against Saddam. More and more people began acting against the president and wanted his fall. United States post-2000 started to look at Saddam as a tyrant. Post US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the Iraqi government collapsed.
