Daniel Anthony Padilla developed a website in 2002 in the name of smosh.com for hosting flash animations. Many people used to send their videos to Padilla, who would post their videos on his website before YouTube became popular. His friend from childhood Ian Andrew Hecox joined Padilla, and the duo created a YouTube channel in 2005 in the same name of their website.
Padilla and Hecox initially posted lip sync videos in which they would lip sync for some famous theme songs like Mortal Kombat, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Power Rangers. One such video which brought them popularity was their Pokemon Theme Music Video in which the duo did lip sync to the Pokemon theme music. The video received more than 24 million views and became the most viewed video on YouTube at that time.
The video was removed for copyright issues, but it paved the way for the success of Smosh earning them a place in the Person of the Year: You by the Time Magazine in 2006. The video was re-uploaded by another YouTube user in 2007 and has so far received more than 15 million views.
Post the success of the Pokemon video, Smosh started to make comical skit videos like Food Battle, and the channel witnessed a steady increase in its subscriber’s list. The smosh.com was redesigned in 2009, and it started to have game sections and video sections.
In 2010, Smosh launched web series such as Ian Is Bored which was later changed to Smosh Is Bored; Ask Charlie, Lunchtime with Smosh in which the duo will taste food from various places while answering questions on Twitter and Pokemon in Real Life and If ____ Was Real.
They also partnered with Google and created their app for Android iShut Up App which was later developed for iOS. Padilla and Hecox started three new channels in 2012; ElSmosh that hosted the Spanish version of their videos, Shut Up! Cartoons that published animated videos and Smosh Games that posted videos on gaming.
In 2015, they started a sketch series titled Every (Blank), and in 2016 a web sitcom titled Part Timers was started on Smosh’s main channel. In June 2014, Padilla announced that he was leaving Smosh to start a solo career and since then Hecox remains as its solo head. The channel has so far garnered over 7 billion views and has over 23 million subscribers.
Smosh is currently the 25th most subscribed channel on YouTube which has also been the most subscribed channel on YouTube on three different time periods.
