Richard Bertrand Spencer was born on May 11, 1978, in Boston, Massachusetts to his parents Sherry and Rand Spencer. His father was an ophthalmologist, and his mother was an heiress who worked at the cotton farms in Louisiana.
He spent most of his childhood days in Dallas, Texas. Spencer graduated from the St. Mark’s School of Texas in the year 1997. He went to the University of Virginia in the year 2001 where he received his degree in Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Music. Later he went to the University of Chicago to complete his Masters of Arts in 2003.
From 2005 to 2006, he was a student at the Vienna International Summer University. Later in 2005, he went to the Duke University to complete his Ph.D. in modern European intellectual history.

Richard Spencer started his career as an assistant editor at The American Conservative magazine in the year 2007. He was later fired from the company because his opinions were considered too extreme. He later joined the Taki’s Magazine as an executive editor in the year 2008.
In 2010, he founded the website “AlternativeRight.com” and edited the website himself till 2002. He was appointed as the executive director of the Washington Summit Publishers on January 2011. In the same year, he was made the director and president of the National Policy Institute.
He founded a biannual publication which was known as “Radix Journal” in 2012.
In 2014, while organizing a conference for white nationalists, he was deported from Hungary and was also banned to enter 26 countries in Europe.
In January 2017, Spencer along with Swedish publisher Daniel Friberg launched the website “AltRight.com” for the members of the alt-right community.
In August 2017, he has listed on the posters of Unite the Right rally at Virginia which eventually led to a violent confrontation. In the same year, social networking website Twitter removed the blue tick which is a sign of authenticity from his account.
