Early Life & Biography:
Pablo was born on 1 December 1949 in the Rionegro city of Colombia but grew up in Medellín city. For studies, he went to Universidad Autónoma Latinoamericana, Medellin but dropped out in the middle without receiving any degree and got engaged in criminal activities like the selling of smuggled cigarettes and duplicate lottery tickets. He then expanded his illegal activities and began to kidnap people for ransoms.
Pablo is the third among the seven children of Abel de Jesús Dari Escobar Echeverri (a farmer) and Hemilda de los Dolores Gaviria Berrío (a primary school teacher). In March 1976, he fell in love with a 15-year girl Maria Victoria Henao and subsequently got married. However, Maria’s family stood against this relationship due to the criminal activities of Pablo as a result of which the pair had to elope. Before the death of Pablo on 2nd December 1993, the couple was blessed to have a son named Sebastián Marroquín and a daughter named Manuela.
Pablo began his criminal activities during his teenage only. His initial crimes included small smugglings and thefts but later expanded to kidnapping and collecting ransoms. At the beginning of 1975, he started his international cocaine business especially between Colombia and various cities of the United States. In 1976, he got arrested with some of his men possessing 18 kg of Cocaine.
He initially tried to bribe the judges handling his case, but when failed to do so, he planned the murder of the officers who arrested him and got acquitted. During the height of his power, he used to smuggle around 15 tons of cocaine per day which were worth more than $0.5 billion. In 1991, he surrendered before the Colombian authorities after they offered him a reduced sentence and special treatment in jail.
He continued to manage his business even when he was in the prison which forced the Colombian govt to shift him to another prison. However, Pablo’s sources gave him this information in advance, and so he managed to escape the jail. After 16 months on 2nd December 1993, he got killed in an encounter with the Columbian police.

Each month, he was going through a loss of $2.1 billion just because he couldn’t handle all the cash and rats destroyed around 10% of the money. However, he never cared as the loss was like a drop in the ocean. Moreover, he used to spend $2500 just to buy rubber bands to tie the note bundles.
