Early Life & Biography
Gregory Ellis Mathis was born in April 1960, in Detroit, Michigan. He is the son of Charles Mathis and Alice Lee Mathis. He has three older brothers, and his mother used to work as a housekeeper. In 1964, his family moved to Herman Gardens. As a youth, he was a member of the gang Errol Flynns and was also incarcerated.
After getting released from the jail, he became interested in public administration and politics. He later went to the Eastern Michigan University. In there, he joined the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. In 1987, he received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Detroit Mercy.
When he was a student at the Eastern Michigan University, Judge Mathis met Linda Reese. They got married in 1985. In 1995, Judge Mathis was elected to be district court judge from the 36th District of Michigan. He was the youngest person from the state to hold the post. In 1988, he was appointed as the head in the presidential campaign of Jesse Jackson.
