Early Life & Biography:
Giovanni Maria Versace was born on 2 December 1946, in Reggio Calabria, Italy. He had an elder brother and a younger sister. His mother was a dressmaker. Versace was highly influenced by the ancient Greek history and went to the “Liceo Classico Tommaso Campanella” to study Latin and ancient Greek.
At a very young age, he started working at his mother’s sewing business along with a dozen of other seamstresses. At the age of 26, he moved to Milan to work as a fashion designer.
In 1982, Versace met his partner Antonio D’Amico who was a model and fashion designer. They were together until he was murdered outside his home in the year 1997. Versace was also known for doting on his nieces and nephews.

Giovanni Versace started his career in the year 1973 as the designer of a successful Genny’s youthful line “Byblos”. A few years later he presented his first signature collection for women. In the same year, he started expanding his business into jewelry, designing luxury furnishings, textiles and many more. In 1989, Versace expanded his company into “haute couture”.
He was also a collaborator at the La Scala Theatre Ballet and used to design costumes for various shows. He has also designed costumes for the Béjart Ballet productions. In 1990, he designed for the San Francisco Opera’s production of Capriccio.
