Early Life & Biography
Florence was born on July 19, 1868, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania as Narcissa Florence Foster. She was born to Charles Dorrance Foster, an attorney of a wealthy family and Mary Jane Hoagland Foster.
Foster was a talented pianist from a young age and she used to perform at society functions with a stage name of “Little Miss Foster”. She has also given a recital at The White House when Rutherford B. Hayes was the President. Her desire to study music in Europe was denied by her father.
As her father denied permission to travel to Europe, she eloped to Philadelphia with Dr. Frank Thornton Jenkins and the couple got married in the year 1885. Their relationship came to an end after she came to know that she has contracted syphilis from Frank. Some sources say that she was reportedly in a relationship with a British actor St. Clair Bayfield from 1909 until her death in 1944.
Career, Awards & Nominations
Florence was a talented pianist and used to give piano classes to children in her neighborhood. But after an arm injury, she could not foresee a career with a piano and she shifted her attention towards singing.
She had a sizeable amount of wealth which helped her take vocal classes and mingle with people in the upper-class society. She was also known for producing Tableaux Vivants in which she would always cast herself as the lead character. In one of such tableau, she posed in a costume with angel’s wings which she herself had designed.
Florence managed to perform in many vocal concerts during her peak but none of them were well received by the critics. Though many celebrities of her time were her fans, she was constantly mocked for her terrible singing skills. Florence never gave a damn about her haters and continued performing in operas where there would be no general audience but mostly friends of her. In 1944, she announced a performance that would accommodate general public and to everyone’s surprise, the event was sold out completely. A month after the performance, Florence died, suffering a heart-attack.
In 2009, Everyday Visuals released an album titled Florence Foster Jenkins as a tribute to her fighting spirit. In 2016 a British biopic of her titled Florence Foster Jenkins was released starring Meryl Streep in the title role. There are also five stage plays that were written drawing inspiration from her.
