Early Life & Biography
Tommy was born in 1953 on September 1st in Montgomery, Alabama and here, he played with various bands. He attended Robert E Lee High School to join The Smoke Ring and after MSFunk, a Chicago based band that he played for three years. Through this band, he got noticed by the band, Styx, after a two-week club event in Chicago.
After MSFunk got to be disbanded, he returned to Montgomery where he continued to play with the local band Harmony which included his childhood friends. The group used to perform at club Keglers Kove, and after some time, he joined Styx. During his audition, he was not required to play the guitar, and all he gave the band was his demo tape.
Shaw got married to his second wife Pamela Donnelly on February 15th in 1968, and the couple was blessed with a daughter by the name Hannah. After seven years of marriage, they got divorced in 1993. He wedded his current wife, Jeanne Mason in 2000 and their home was featured on the ‘Flipping Out’ season 5. In an interview, he stated that during his first tenure with the Damn Yankees that he was a very strict vegetarian.

When he was living in Chicago, he used to play with two bands ‘The Smoke Ring’ and ‘MSFUNK,’ which he did for three years. His excellent performance with the ‘MSFUNK’ band was the one that caught the attention of Styx. MSFUNK got disbanded, and the members went separate ways. After the band disbanded, he moved to his hometown where he worked with Harvest band.
His journey with Styx band started in a very surprising way as the band was looking for a guitarist and a vocalist. He was given a call to audition for the role, and he left his hometown for the audition. Interestingly, during his audition, he never played any guitar, and all that he submitted were his demos. He got the job and went on to perform with the band on several occasions. He has been honored with Alabama Music Hall of Fame for his spectacular skills in music.
