Steve Harwell’s birth name is Steven Scott Harwell. He was born on January 9, 1967, in Santa Clara, California, United States. He completed his high school in Prospect High School in Saratoga, California. Steve had a love for singing from his childhood and eventually took it seriously when he became an adult. Steve says that when he was a kid, he was afraid of nuns especially the old nuns as their appearance drove him paranoid.
Steve is married to Michelle Laroque. The couple had a son named Presley Scott Harwell, who died in 2001 when he was only six months old due to acute lymphatic leukemia. After the tragedy, Harwell started a fundraising organization in the name of Presley to help people who suffer from such diseases.

In 1994, Smash Mouth was formed by Steve Harwell, Kevin Coleman, Greg Camp, and Paul De Lisle. Prior to the formation of Smash Mouth, Steve was working as a rapper in FOS (Freedom of Speech). Harwell was introduced to Greg Camp and Paul De Lisle by his manager Kevin Coleman.
The four began to jam where Harwell was the singer, Greg Camp handling guitar, Paul De Isle with bass, and Kevin Coleman hitting the drums. They went on to form a band and named it Smashmouth and played mostly rock music.
The band released its debut album Fush Yu Mung in the year 1997 partnered with Interscope Records. It was after the success of this album that the band changed its name from Smashmouth to Smash Mouth. In 1999, they released their second album Astro Lounge and went on become one of their most critically acclaimed albums till date.
