Moby was born on September 11, 1965, in Harlem, New York, United States. His parents were James Frederick Hall and Elizabeth McBride. His birth name is Richard Melville Hall, and he says that his stage name Moby was a nickname used by his parents as they have an ancestral relationship with Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick.
