  1. I guess it was about 1990 or so and man, My scene looked dead-southern California punk was on it’s way to becoming history-going the way of the buffalo. Most bands were changing their sound, shows had gotten to be pretty ugly, sad, and wore out. Most punks I knew-and I knew a-fucking-lot were either “growing up”, i.e. college, jobs, kids, whatever, there was little time for the scene, some were becoming more hardcore gangster-less hardcore punker, turning back into the weirdos they were before they had found punk, many were becoming hippies, junkies, dope fiends-or had found the grave, the worst was the ones that acted like they were too hi-brow for Punk rock and it’s lowly, juvenile capers. For all intent and purposes it looked as though ‘Punk’ had run it’s course for me…”god damn”, I thought “I can’t follow the fucking Dead around ‘cuz I don’t own a VW bus, time to get serious about my future I guess”
Then I saw NOFX at some shit hole in HB or Westminster I think they played with Youth Brigade I’m pretty sure of that because I had gone to see them play-hoping against hope that they would rejuvenate me with a trip down “Sound and the fury” memory lane. Anyways, I had heard that they were only gonna play ‘Brigade’ type shit so I was going to split with these chicks I had met in the parking lot. (I can’t remember the place but it was next to the old Cookoo’s Nest I believe) I run into a buddy of mine as I was leaving and he insisted I see this band. “What band?” asks I “Fucking NOFX you Retard” , “No-who, the opening band? Fuck that, dude I know has a ’45 from them, I listened to it and it blows goats” says I . “Dude, they are the shit dude….seriously, no shit, fucking bad-ass” my buddy practically yelled, no, he did yell it and the he proceeded to lay it out for me that if I was to take off before seeing NOFX I was sure to be crowned King Shit of Crap Island and that I could trade my dickies for wranglers and just move to my new island forever.

Long story short….I went in, saw them play, and sweet mother of Mary…holy smokes. Simply put, as a result of that show (I didn’t hang around for the Brigade by the way) instead of entering a life that was a closet full of polo shirts, Rip Curl stickers on my new Acura, and listening to Limp Biscuit, I never hung up my boots and have remained as punk today at…50..nevermind, as punk today as I ever was. I never gave it up. I am grateful for that, I owe NOFX for keeping me on azimuth for another 30+ years of this, ‘this punk thing” as my Mother (R.I.P) used to say. So if any of the band actually read this….and I say this with much love….”Thanks Turd lickers!”
