Carol Joan Klein was born on February 9, 1942, in Manhattan, New York, the United States to Eugenia and Sidney N. Klein. Carol was trained by her mother in music when she was four years old, and she formed a band named Co-Sines and changed her name to Carole King when she was at the James Madison High School. She then attended the Queens College, where she started to write and record songs with her first husband, Gerry Goffin.
