Born as David Shepard Smith Jr. in Holly Springs, Mississippi, his parents are David Shepard Smith Sr. and Dora Allen Anderson. He was born in January 1964. His father was a cotton merchant and his mother used to work as an English teacher. His parents later got separated and he went to live with his mother.
He went to a private school called Marshall Academy in Holly Springs. After completing his high school, Smith went to the University of Mississippi for his journalism major. However, he did not graduate. He has occasionally returned to his university for college football and has also delivered an annual commencement address.
