David was born in the year 1962 on May 8th in Isleworth, Middlesex. He grew up in the College House on Campus of University College, Leicester. This was where his father, Frederick was working as a principal. He is the second born in a family of three sons. His brothers pursued a different career with Richard becoming an actor and a director while the younger brother, John served as an executive Italian car manufacturer. During the World War II, their parents adopted two Jewish refugee girls from Europe.
He got married to Jane Elizabeth Ebsworth in 1970 who later died in 1997. This couple was blessed with two children, Susan and Robert. Robert has been working as a senior lecturer in bio anthropology an Australian National University while Susan worked as a Primary school headmistress.

After he left the Navy, David started to work in a publishing company where his major role was editing children’s books. He was disillusioned by this work and went on to apply for a job as the radio talk producer with BBC. Despite him being rejected for the job, he later caught the interest of Mary Adams, who was the head of the Talks Department. During this time, he never owned a television and had only watched on television at that time. Mary Adams offered to train him for three months and later on, he was employed full time by BBC.
