Wang Jianlin was born in Cangxi County in Guangyuan, Sichuan, China on October 24, 1954. His father was a member of the People’s Liberation Army under Mao Zedong who participated in the Long March. After serving the PLA for 16 years, Wang joined the Xigang district office as an office administrator, and in 1989 he was appointed as the GM of the Xigang Residential Development. He established a real estate company in 1988 which in 1992 became the Dalian Wanda Group.

After years of build up, Wang established his company as the largest real estate developer in China which has 21.57 million Sq mts on investment property. In and around China the company has 213 theatres, 168 shopping plazas, 99 departmental stores, 82 hotels, and 54 karaoke centers.

The Dalian Wanda Group acquired America’s largest theatre operator AMC Theatres in 2012 for $2.6 billion and became the world’s largest theatre operator. Wang launched a mini-Hollywood in China in 2014, and the inaugural ceremony was attended by DiCaprio, John Travolta, and many others.

In 2014, the company acquired the Edificio Espana building in Spain for 389 million euros, and in 2015 Wang purchased a 20% stake in Atletico Madrid FC for 45 million euros. The company also owns the Legendary Entertainment, a production company and conducts the China Cup in China along with FIFA each year from 2016.
