Early Life & Biography
Leslie Calvin Brown was born on 17th February, 1945, in Miami, Florida, the United States in an abandoned building along with his twin brother Wesley. Leslie was adopted by a thirty-eight-year-old single woman named Mamie Brown who was a domestic and a cafeteria attendant.
While in grade school, Brown was declared educable mentally retarded and overcame the condition with the help of his mother and his high school teacher who encouraged him and brought out his full potential. Brown often mentions this phase of his life in his speeches to motivate his listeners.
In 1995, Les Brown married singer Gladys Knight also known as the Empress of Soul in a private ceremony in Las Vegas. The marriage did not last long, and the couple got divorced in 1997. Les Brown has ten children namely, Calvin, John Andrew, Ona, Tayloria, Patrick, Thad, Ayanna, Serena, Sumaya, and John- Leslie. He has fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In 1997, Les Brown was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Les Brown decided to become a radio jockey and used to visit a local radio station where he was given sanitation jobs. He turned up every day at the station and one fine day he got the opportunity to go on-air as the scheduled radio jockey could not make it to the show. Les Brown grabbed the opportunity and inspired the people of the radio station and was taken as one of the station’s permanent employees from that day.
He later became a social activist which led to many controversies and soon he was terminated from his job. Brown contested for a seat in the Ohio State Legislature and held the seat for three terms becoming the chairman of Human Resources Committee the third term.
