Eric Koston was born in 1975 on 29th April 29 in Bangkok, Thailand, to parents Bob and Wanida Koston. He was born in the same hospital as his fellow professional skateboarder Alphonzo Rawls. Koston and his family moved to California when he was 9 months old.
He was raised in San Bernardino, California after his parents divorced. The man began skating in 1986. At that time, he was only 11 years, and his older brother had given him an old skateboard with mismatched trucks. He took on skating right away, learning ollies and heelflips by practicing every day in his driveway. Koston dropped out of high school after realizing that his prowess in skating was good enough to earn him a living. He moved to San Diego to skateboard fulltime.

Koston got into professional skateboarding after being sponsored by the H-Street company which was co-founded by Tony Magnusson and Mike Ternasky. He became widely recognized for his mastery in street skateboarding. Koston then became part of the eS brand and was a leading team rider.
