Staubach was born on February 5th in 1942 in Cincinnati Ohio. He is of the German descent, and he grew up in Silverton, which is a suburb in the Cincinnati. He was the only child of the family and was a Boys Scout in his youth. He schooled at the St John Evangelical Catholic School. Later on, he graduated from the Purcell High School in 1960. He then went on and joined New Mexico Military Institute in the Roswell. He was here for a year and later joined the US Naval Academy where he completed his coursework.
