Leon Spinks was born on July 11, 1953, in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. When Spinks was born his weight was less than an average child due to the weak immune system. As a result, he used to get various diseases like jaundice and yellow fever very easily.
However, he fought for his life several times and survived miraculously. As a teenager, Spinks along with his brother was bullied a lot by the children of the neighbourhood.
His father left his family when he was a child, and it was his mother who took up the responsibility of the family. After completing the 10th grade, he joined the U.S military for a brief amount of time.

Leon Spinks started his amateur boxing career in the year 1974 and won the National AAU light heavyweight championship. He was the champion for the next two years.
Spinks made his professional boxing debut in 1977 when he defeated Bob Smith via knockout in Las Vegas. In his next match, he defeated Peter Freeman in the first round via knockout. He also defeated Pedro Agosto and the former Italian champion Scott LeDoux by a decision.
In 1978, Spinks made history by defeating the legendary Muhammad Ali and won the World Heavyweight Championship.
