Rosalie Anderson MacDowell was born on April 21, 1958, in Gaffney, South Carolina, the United States to Pauline Johnston and Marion St. Pierre MacDowell. Andie’s parents divorced when she was just 6, and her father remarried a woman named Mary Frances Stone when Andie was eight years old. She studied at the Winthrop University and was first approached by the Wilhelmina Models. In 1978, she signed with the Elite Model Management.
In 1986, Andie married fellow model Paul Qualley whom she met at the posing for a Gap ad. The couple are blessed with a son and two daughters namely Justin, Rainey, and Sarah Margaret Qualley among whom Sarah is also an actress. The couple divorced in 1999 following which MacDowell married businessman Rhett Hartzog in 2001. Their marriage ended up in a divorce in 2004.

MacDowell started her career as a fashion model posing for the Vogue and appearing on ads for Vassarette, Yves Saint Laurent, Armani perfume, Bill Blass, and Mink International.
