Early Life & Biography
Mr. T was born Laurence Tureaud on 21st May 1952 in Chicago Illinois and has 11 siblings and lucky enough to be the last born in the family. Laurence’s dad was known as Nathaniel Tureaud Sr. and was a minister. He was however brought up in a very poor background and they all lived in a 3-roomed house and in an environment that was full of crimes and high level of environment pollutants. According to Tureaud’s confession, surviving in such an environment and succeeding in life needed a strong-willed personality.
Mr. T attended Dunbar Vocational High School and was a member of different sports clubs which include: football, martial arts and wrestling. While in high school, Tureaud became a citywide wrestling champion in two consecutive years. He also won a football scholarship as he was also good in football and he was able at Prairie View A&M University where he took mathematics as his main course. The joy of studying in a university was short-lived as he was expelled one year down the line.
After his expulsion from University, he decided to join United States Army where he served as a Military Police Corps.
Laurence married Phillys Clark in 1971 and the couple was blessed with three children, two daughters (Erika and Lesa), and a son (Laurence Tureaud Jr.). Their marriage however wasn’t successful and the two separated but no details have been given about the separation or his ex-wife as Mr. T tries his best to keep his personal life away from the limelight.
Career, Awards & Nominations
Although Mr. T has won many times as a wrestler, he however became famous as an actor. He has appeared in different shows and films some of which include: “America’s Toughest Bouncer” competition known as Games People Play, Rocky III, The Beastmaster, Penitentiary 2, Bizarre and The A-Team among many others.
Mr. T became a professional wrestler in 1985 and started off as Hulk Hogan’s tag team partner when he first took part at the WWF (World Wrestling Federation’s first WrestleMania and he emerged a winner. He later became a special “WWF boxer”. In 1987, he returned to WWF as a special guest referee while on 21st July 1989, he appeared in World Class Championship Wrestling seconding Kerry Von Erich. He has made several appearances as a special referee since 1989.
Other than being a wrestler and an actor, he has also released several albums all majoring on inspiring and encouraging children to stay in school and value their education. He has also advised young people to stay away from drugs in a number of his albums.
