Lin-Manuel Miranda was born on January 16, 1980, in New York City to his parents Luis A and Luz Towns. He grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood in northern Manhattan. Even though he spent most of his childhood in the Latino neighborhood of Inwood, he used to spend at least one month at his grandparent’s house in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico.
Miranda got enrolled at Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School. After completion of his schooling, he attended the Wesleyan University, where he co-founded a hip-hop comedy troupe named Freestyle Love Supreme.
Before graduating from the Wesleyan University, he wrote his first draft of In the Heights in 1999. He completed his graduation in 2002.
