Dennis Franz Schlachta was born in Maywood, Illinois on October 28, 1944, to Franz Ferdinand Schlachta and Eleanor. His father was a postal worker and his mother was a baker. He has two siblings Marlene and Heidi. Franz went to the Proviso East High School in 1962 where he played several sports including football, baseball, and swimming.
Later, Franz attended the Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Wilbur Wright College where he earned his degree in speech and theatre in the year 1968. After graduating from college he served the United States Army for 11 months with the 101st Airborne Division and 82nd Airborne Division in Vietnam.
He married Joanie Zeck in the year 1995. He is the stepfather of his wife’s two children from her previous relationship.

Dennis Franz started his professional acting career at Chicago’s Organic Theater Company. During his initial years, he was mostly typecasted as a police officer. He guest starred in many shows including The A-Team, Riptide, Bay City Blues, Chicago Story, T.J. Hooker and many more.
