Early Life & Biography
Amitabh was born as Inquilaab Srivastava on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh to Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a poet, and Teji Bachchan. Harivansh named his son Inquilaab as he was very much attracted by the phrase “Inquilaab Zindabad” meaning “long live the revolution” which was quite famous during India’s struggle for freedom. His father later changed his name to Amitabh. Amitabh attended the Sherwood College in Nainital and later the Kirori Mal College.
Amitabh first saw his wife Jaya Bhaduri on the cover of a magazine and was very much attracted by her beauty especially her eyes. Jaya was quite a familiar actor at that time, but Amitabh was still struggling to stabilize himself. The duo was first paired in the film Guddi after which they started to develop feelings for each other. Their relationship became strong day by day, and the couple decided to tie a knot in 1973 after the success of their film Zanjeer. They have a daughter Shweta Bachchan and a son Abhishek Bachchan who is also an actor.
Career, Awards & Nominations
Bachchan made his debut as an actor in the movie Saat Hindustani in which he was one among the seven protagonists. In 1971, he starred alongside Rajesh Khanna in the film Anand and received a Filmfare award for the best supporting role. Bachchan then acted in films like Parwana, Reshma Aur Shera, Guddi, and Bombay to Goa but did not get the break he needed as the films were not well received.
His much-needed breakthrough came through the film Zanjeer in 1973, which became a huge commercial success and brought him the “Angry Young Man” image he became well known for. Success started to visit him regularly after that as his films Deewar, Sholay, Trishul, and Shakthi became huge hits and he garnered a very big fan base as his films addressed issues like poverty, corruption, and unemployment.
After enjoying great success till 1988, he went through a tough phase for eight years and came back through the films Major Saab and Sooryavansham. He has also acted in the Hollywood movie The Great Gatsby. In 2000, he hosted the show Kaun Banega Crorepati, and in 2009 he hosted the 3rd season of Bigg Boss.
Amitabh has so far won four National Film Awards in Best Actor category, 15 Filmfare Awards, and 41 Filmfare nominations, and also many international awards. The Indian Government felicitated has him with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Padma Vibhushan awards. The French Government also honored him with the Legion of Honour in 2007.
