Sam was born on 29th March 1918 in Kingfisher Oklahoma in the United States. His parents were Thomas Gibson Walton and Nancy Lee. His brother James was born in 1921. Sam lived with his parents on their farm. When his father realized that the farm produce could not sustain his family, he shifted to farm mortgaging. He worked with his brother’s Walton Mortgage Company.
Sam went to Columbia’s David H. Hickman High School for his early education. After completion, he joined the University of Missouri in 1940 for his B.A degree in economics. While in college he was the president of Burrell Bible Class and a member of Beta Theta fraternity.
