Donald Francis Shula is the son of Mary and Dan Shula. He was born on 4 January 1930, in Grand River, Ohio. He used to play football in his neighbourhood.
He went to Thomas W. Harvey and has also been to St. Mary’s School. Later, he received a scholarship at the University Heights.

In 1951, Dan Shula became a teacher and coach at the Canton Lincoln High School for a year. In the 1951 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Cleveland Browns. He signed a contract for a year with the Browns and played as a defensive back.
In 1953, he got traded to the Baltimore Colts. In 1955, he made five interceptions. He became a coach in 1958. That same year, Shula was appointed as the assistant coach of the University of Virginia. Following that he became the assistant coach of the University of Kentucky.
Shula became the head coach of Baltimore Colts in 1963. He became the youngest coach at that time. In his second year as a coach, the team made a record of 12-2. In 1969, he was named as the second head coach of Miami Dolphins. With them, he won the Super Bowl VII and remained as coach till 1995.
