His full names are David Andrew Leo Fincher, son of Howard Kelly Fincher, an author, and Claire Mae Boettcher, who worked as a mental health nurse. He was born in Denver, Colorado on 28 August 1962. His family relocated to San Anselmo, California when he was only two years old. From an early age, he knew he wanted to be in the film industry.
He attended Ashland High School. While he was still in high school, he used to direct plays, and design lighting and sets after school. He worked at a movie theatre as a non-union projectionist.
